June Miles


Can someone please tell me where the month of June went?? I can't believe we're heading into July already. I had a momentary freakout when I realized how close we are to the Pike's Peak Ascent. That is going to be here before I know it. 

If this is your first Monthly Miles-- welcome! Monthly Miles is relatively new here at Unapologetically You. It is a great way for me to reflect on the miles I put in over the past month, find areas to improve, and encourage others to put a few miles in over the coming month :)

 As I mentioned in the first edition of Monthly Miles, I track my cycling miles as "equivalent miles" based on calorie burn. A running mile is not equivalent to a cycling mile.

June Miles - 164 miles

Running - 111 miles
Cycling - 141 miles

YDT Equivalent Miles - 874 miles

June was relatively low in mileage compared to May. The biggest contributing factor would be  significantly less cycling miles. I had almost twice as many cycling miles last month!

I ran one race in June. You can read my Skirt Sports Virtual 13er race report here. The Virtual 13er was my first Virtual Race and it was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to running the Skirt Sports Virtual Boobie Run on September 12th (I'd love for you to join me!). I also participated in my first organized bike event. The SMECO 75 was such a well organized event. After completing the bike event, my cycling miles significantly decreased. I only rode twice after that during June and both were pretty short distances. I need to get on my bike more. Ask me next month how I'm doing! 

June was the official start of Pike's Peak Ascent prep. Week one fell on the same weekend as the Virtual 13er so after I finished running 13.1 miles I hopped on the treadmill for 30 more minutes at 6-8% incline. That day was rough. Thank you Southern Maryland heat and humidity. The second week of Pike's Peak Prep consisted of 3 hours of running. I did 1 hour 50 minutes outside, then 1 hour 10 minutes on the treadmill at 6-8% incline. The third week of Pike's Peak Prep consisted of, yes you guessed it-- 3 hours 30 minutes (do you sense a pattern..)! I was all on my own for this one. I ran outside for 1 hour 20 minutes, then went inside to the elliptical for 50 minutes (keeping my heart rate equivalent to running at 150-160 bmp), and finished with 1 hour 20 minutes on the treadmill at 6-8% incline. I covered 18 miles in those 3.5 hours. Slower than I want my marathon pace to be for MCM in October, but considering the incline I was pretty happy with that (and feeling sort of badass!).

I had two medium distance runs at St. Mary's Lake, several short runs, and four hill specific workouts in June. Hill days were probably my toughest workouts. I did two different types of hill workouts. The first being a progressive hill run and the second being a modified fartlek hill workout. 

Each week I included a HIIT workout into my routine. I also did sunrise yoga and my first beyond barre class! I value my rest and recovery days, so of course I had one rest day each week as well. Typically the day following my long workout.
