National Running Day!


National Running Day is coming up on June 3rd-- who else is excited to celebrate such a fun and healthy day? :) I got the opportunity to link up with Kristen over at Jonesin' for a Run who put together this awesome National Running Day Interview.

1. Why do you run?

I run for chocolate! Just kidding..sort of :) I went into a lot of detail answering this question while participating in the Fit Approach and Skirt Sports #REALwomenmove Challenge. You can check out my full response here. But at the core, I run because allows me to be the best version of myself. I can continually push myself and strive for more. I love the feeling of setting and accomplishing goals. And with running-- you can see measurable results. It's pretty neat.

2. How do you plan to celebrate National Running Day?

I have my first cycling event coming up on June 6th and will be keeping National Running Day pretty low key. Right now I'm planning a short easy run-- probably 3-ish early morning miles. Gotta beat the Southern Maryland heat and humidity!

3. How many miles have you run so far this year?

I'm up to 710 miles for 2015! Woo hoo! :) Check out my monthly miles features to see what went into those miles. You can find March Miles hereApril Miles hereand May Miles here.  

4. What big events do you have on the race calendar so far this year?

My race calendar is pretty much full for this year-- unless something really cool pops up. Then who knows..

Big events planned for 2015--

SMECO 75 mile Bike Ride (June 6th)
Skirt Sports Virtual 13er (June 13th - 14th)
Pike's Peak Ascent (August 15th)
Wineglass Half Marathon (October 4th)
Marine Corps Marathon (October 25th)

5. Before you leave for a run you must have:

Sunglasses, GPS watch, an easy snack like dried fruit or a Cliff Bar (just in case my blood sugar drops), and water. 

6. Do you have one favorite app to track your runs?

I use my Soleus GPS Watch as my "official" source for tracking distance. I keep a log using Google Docs. Sometimes I'll use MapMyRun. I also just got a Vivofit 2 and have been wearing that in addition to my GPS Watch. 

7. Who is your favorite running partner?

Nick and Sarge! Always ready for a running adventure!


8. What races have you run so far this year?

2015 has been a great running year so far! I've run the Dahlgren Trail Half Marathon, the Marine Corps 17.75K, the Blue Ridge Half Marathon, and the ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon.





9. If you had to give someone one piece of advice about running what would it be?

Don't compare yourself to anyone but you. Unless you are an elite runner you are most likely out there because you want to be healthy, active, and to better yourself. You can't compare your running journey to anyone else's. Some days you will feel amazing and other days you will wonder why you do this thing called running. Stay positive and have fun!

10. Describe your relationship with running in one word:

Persistent

Whether you are new to running or have been running for years, National Running Day is a great opportunity to get out and move! If you've never run before I encourage you to give it a shot. You may end up finding a new passion. Don't know where to start? Keep it simple! Try running for 2 min, take a 1 min walk break. If that's too easy-- increase the amount of time on each run interval. Strive for at least a mile. You can download MapMyRun to your smart phone for an easy way to track the distance. And there's no shame in walking ;-)
