7 Tips to Help You Prepare for The Color Run

The Happiest 5K on the Planet

You've done it. You finally signed up for The Color Run. Maybe you're favorite Color Run Ambassador (me!) convinced you to sign up. Or maybe you did it all on your own free will. Either way-- it's time to prepare yourself to be coated in a rainbow of colored powdered over the course of 3.1 miles!

What Is The Color Run?

Not familiar with The Color Run? The Color Run is a 5K where participants walk, run, dance, cartwheel, etc their way through several color stations. Participants are encouraged to wear a white shirt, which will then get coated in colored powder.

The Color Run Shine Tour is new in 2015. The 2015 Shine Tour is designed to uplift and inspire runners to stand out from the crowd, sweat sparkles, and continue to live their lives in a happy and healthy way.

Be Prepared

As you might guess, The Color Run can be sort of messy-- Or so I've heard. The Color Run DC {on September 27th} is my first!! I've done a lot of research regarding preparing for The Color Run. Here's a list of 7 tips to help you prepare for your first color run.

"Check out these 7 tips to prep for the #colorrun via @amanda__maureen! #happiest5k #weshine @TheColorRun http://tinyurl.com/prj3spz"

1. It's not a race. Most people will be leisurely running or walking the 5k. Don't plan on any PRs. Why race through anyway? The point is to get covered in color! If you go too fast you'll miss out.

2. The Color Run is best done with a group of fun-loving people like yourself. Grab your friends, family, co-workers and sign up! Plan group t-shirts or outfits. Got a group of women running? Consider tutus :) You can {and should!} go all out for this event! The wackier, the better.

3. Wear white. As much as you reasonably can {maybe consider leaving the thin white pants at home..}. You want to leave looking like a rainbow, so if you wear colors, especially dark ones, you probably won't get the desired results.

4. Don't buy clothes for The Color Run unless it's just a pack of plain white t-shirts or something specific for your group outfit. Especially don't buy any new expensive brand name clothing. There is the potential of the colored powder ruining your clothes. According to The Color Run FAQs-- the color will most likely come out, but it's better to be safe.

5. It is possible that you could get colored powder in your eyes, so make sure you protect those precious baby blues {or greens, browns, etc}! Consider wearing sunglasses or even swim goggles.

6. Hair tends to be one of the biggest concerns for The Color Run newbies. A quick Google search will give you lots of results for how to prepare your hair. Everything I read said that all hair types react differently to the colored powder. Light hair, processed hair, and fine hair all tend to stain pretty easily. Darker hair and coarse hair tend to be a bit safer. One way to prepare your hair, according to The Color Run FAQs, is to use a thin layer of oil on your hair to prevent the colored powder from sticking to your strands. Another suggestion is to wear your hair back in a pony tail. Or even better-- cover your hair with a scarf, bandanna, or hat!

7. Expect the colored powder to end up everywhere. Your expensive smart phone isn't completely safe at The Color Run. You could put it in a zip lock bag and snap pictures through that while on the course, or you could purchase a cheap disposable camera. Whatever you end up doing with your phone-- you've been warned :)
