A Grand Adventure & Marathon Training Recap {Week 7}

Grand Canyon, Rafting, White Water, Adventure

Last week I felt tired, unmotivated, overwhelmed. I didn't feel creative and I struggled to get out the two posts that I published. I was loving the BOSUstrong Challenge, but just didn't feel motivated to participate last week. I felt like there was too much to do and not enough time {who can relate??}.

It was a case of "I have too much to do so I don't want to do anything."

I just wanted to curl up on the couch with my brand new Grand Canyon sleeping bag and Kindle Fire 7.

And that's exactly what I did a few days last week. I rested. Mentally and physically.

Sometimes the mind and body needs a good rest.

Society prides itself on a "go go go" mentality. We must be productive all the time or we fall behind. We need to be connected. We need to respond to that tweet or comment as soon as it arrives. I find myself caught up in that attitude more often than not.

The Grandest of Adventures

In 6 short weeks I will be completely unplugged. No access to WiFi, social media, cell phone, running water, or a real toilet {say what??}.

That's right, I'm going on a crazy awesome 21-day rafting adventure through the Grand Canyon. A once in a lifetime type of trip. I'm excited and nervous for various reasons. But every time I see a photo of the canyon from the water I get slightly overcome with emotion. It is absolutely beautiful. It's magnificent and grand {obviously!} and there are sights that you only get to see by accessing the canyon from the river {sorry hikers}.

I'm going old school and taking a leather-bound journal and some pens. I will be recording each day of the trip. When I return to civilization I will be able to share the wonders of the Grand Canyon with you all. It's ok to be slightly jealous ;-).

I am SO looking forward to being unplugged for a few weeks. I can't imagine going on a trip like this and not coming back changed in one way or another. This will be a "soul searching" type trip. A time for reflection. A time to think about what the coming year holds.

I have some big plans for Unapologetically You as a business and this time will give me an opportunity to really define my goals, expectations, and create a plan of action.

Marathon Training Recap
{Week 7}

Standing between me and the longest vacation I've ever taken is Marine Corps Marathon.

It is officially taper time. Tapering is the act of incrementally reducing your running mileage in order to allow the body to heal, rest, and be at it's peak for race day. There is a lot of information and perspectives on the internet about how best to taper, but ultimately each runner is different and needs to do what works best for them.

My taper started off a little funky because I ran a half marathon the first taper weekend, when I probably should have been running another 20-ish miles. I had signed up for the Wineglass Half Marathon last winter before gaining access into Marine Corps Marathon.

The Details

Monday: 3 morning miles at 9:09 min/mi pace by the light of the super moon! This was actually a really neat run. We used our Knuckle Lights on the main road {so the cars could see us} but once we were back in the development we run in, we turned the lights off {there's never any cars at that time of day} and ran by moon light.

Tuesday: Full rest day. I slept in too. Glorious :)

Wednesday: At home HIIT workout.

Thursday: 3 morning miles at 8:56 min/mi pace. Southern MD was getting hit with some gross rainy windy weather, but I felt strong on this short run. The temperature was cool and the light rain actually felt nice. I was also super rested.

Friday: Rest day due to travel for the race.

Saturday: Wineglass 5K with my dad and sister.

Sunday: Wineglass Half Marathon! Finished in 2:05:08-- a 7+ minute PR! Stay tuned for full race recap later this week.
