Create a Social Media Checklist that Works

When I decided to jump into this whole blogging thing back in 2013, I didn't realize how much stuff needed to be done every.single.day to get yourself noticed.

I pretty much ignored all the extra stuff until this past spring. I wrote when I felt like it. I wrote about seemingly random topics. I wrote about me, me, me. At the time, that was probably fine. It was mostly family and friends reading Unapologetically You anyway. The idea of creating a pinnable image and including social share buttons on my website never occurred to me. Oh, how naive I was.

Then some things changed. I finished grad school, I suddenly had some spare time, and I was accepted as a Sweat Pink Ambassador {woot woot!}.

The combination of those {and several other} life events had me wanting more out of Unapologetically You. Before I knew it I was joining an accountability group {Sweat & Hustle-- you ladies were a game changer!}, posting a few times per week, and trying to grow my social media presence.

So here we are, months later, with so many lessons learned. I am by no means an expert in this blogging world, but I have picked up quite a few things along the way.

I am currently taking the Turn Your Blog into a Money Making Brand eCourse with Abby from Back at Square Zero {she's rocks, btw} and we spent last week talking about our social media strategy. Some of the lessons were things I was sorta, kinda, already implementing. But she put a new light on them.

Side Note: If you're interested in taking Abby's eCourse, she's currently accepting registration for November and December. You can sign up here. Make sure to say that I sent you {I will receive a small commission from the referral}!

My biggest takeaway was the importance of having a social media checklist that works for you

I have tried countless ways of getting myself, my blog and my social media organized. I've used a handwritten calendar, email, Google Docs. I have even used printable checklist from Pinterst. Those things all work, and there is nothing wrong with them, but I realized that none of them were doing exactly what I wanted or needed.

Every blogger is different, hence every social media strategy will be different as well. One size never really fits all. So, what did I do? I created my own blog planner and social media checklist! And you can too.

There are a few key questions to ask yourself before beginning. But once you know what you want and where you want to go, everything sort of falls into place.

Steps to Create a Social Media Checklist that Works:

. Determine where you want your focus to be. We can't do it all, and when we try, everything suffers. Choose 1-2 social media platforms that you want to focus on.
. Determine what to focus on with each of those social media platforms {e.g. building relationships, promoting a product, etc}.
. Determine the optimal time to be on each social media platform. Buffer has an optimal scheduling tool which I love to use for Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

Once you know the where, what and when you can put it in a format that works for you. I love pretty things and cursive hand writing so a printable checklist was perfect for me.

You can download my PDF printable checklist here.

My main focus is Instagram and Twitter, so you'll notice more {and specific} checklist items under those categories. Your focus might be different. If you want your own pretty social media checklist, but find yourself in a creative slump, send me a note-- I'd love to work with you on designing your perfect blog planner and social media checklist!

I'm excited to start implementing this strategy to grow the Unapologetically You brand. If you found this useful I'd love if you sent me a quick tweet to say so!

Your turn! Tell me about your social media strategy. Do you focus on a specific social media platform? How do you decide what and when to post?
