Matcha Mint Smoothie {guest post}

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Since I have a smidgen of Irish heritage, I like to celebrate the holiday in some form or fashion.

Now that I'm well past my college days of bright green beer, I prefer starting my day with a more nutritious green beverage.

Green smoothies are ubiquitous in the healthy living community, but this vibrant concoction contains an ingredient that might be new to some of you: matcha.

What is matcha? Common to China and Japan, matcha is the finely ground powder of a specially grown and processed green tea.

It is often consumed as a hot tea {mixed with water} but can also be used as an ingredient in baked goods, ice cream, mousses, or smoothies.

Matcha is quite the nutritional powerhouse. It is chock full of antioxidants, it may help lower LDL cholesterol, and it aids in boosting your metabolism. It also contains impressive amounts of fiber, vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, and other vitamins and minerals.

I really wanted the bright green color to shine in this smoothie, so I chose a simple flavor profile: vanilla and mint.

I don't know about you, but mint is one of my favorite ingredients. I love it paired with chocolate, of course, but I also enjoy it in savory dishes or on its own.

In the case of this smoothie, mint is the star, and its invigorating flavor balances perfectly with the earthy green tea and naturally sweet banana.


Matcha Mint Smoothie

{serves 1}

Ingredients

. 2 small frozen bananas
. 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
. 1 tbsp. matcha powder*
. 6-8 oz milk of choice
. 1/8 - 1/4 tsp mint extract {be careful-- it's potent!}

Directions

. Add all of your ingredients into a high-speed blender, and blend on medium until all smooth and fully incorporated. Add extra milk {or water} if necessary.
. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

*Check your matcha package for serving size. Mine was 1 tbsp. but yours may be less.

If you want to get into the St. Paddy's Day spirit while staying healthy, then whip up this minty green smoothie and throw on your best green ensemble.

It's the perfect fuel to begin your day-- and whether that involves other kinds of green beverages and a late night, I'll leave that up to you! ;-)
